CONGENITAL HEART DEFECT FACTS
Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are heart abnormalities present at birth and can affect the structure of a baby’s heart and the way it works.
CHDs are the MOST common birth defect, affecting about 1 in 100 births. 40,000 babies a year are born with CHD, meaning that 1 baby is diagnosed with CHD every 15 minutes!
About 1 in 4 babies born with a heart defect has a critical congenital heart defect, and these babies need surgery or other interventions in the first year of life.
There are over 40 different types of CHDs and there is no cure for any of them.
